EASTON — Chief Gary Sullivan is pleased to announce that Easton Police Officer Christopher Aker will be the department’s new School Resource Officer.

Since the end of the school year, Chief Sullivan and Town Administrator Connor Read have met regularly throughout the summer to address the need of a school resource officer. Chief Sullivan has been a longtime advocate of the program and believes it is an important part of community policing and a bridge between the students and law enforcement.

Officer Aker, of Easton, has been with the department since 2004 and in 2015 served as the School Resource Officer for Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School.

Officer Aker will begin his new position next week, ahead of the first day of school for Easton Public Schools on Aug. 30. His duties will be split between the Easton Public Schools and Southeastern Regional.

“Having worked as a school resource officer in Easton in the past, I think Chris will do a great job in filling this vital role as a liaison between the department and our schools,” Chief Sullivan said. “Ideally we would like to have two school resource officers in Easton and we are working toward making that a reality. But in the meantime I believe this a great step in the right direction.”

Since 2015, Officer Aker has been a certified school resource officer through the National Association of School Resource Officers.

He also is currently the department’s field training officer.

His duties will include working closely with the schools’ principals, vice principals and adjustment counselors as well as being a friendly face around the schools on a regular basis.
